ShareMagic Helps Bring Magic Supplies to School Program
By Joshua Jay
ShareMagic provided books and magic kits to James Monroe High School in Southern California, for an after-school magic program that teaches kids magic…and all the life lessons that go along with it.
“Beyond teaching them individual tricks,” says Oscar Palafox, a magician and Special Education teacher, “I am emphasizing the finer points of showmanship and helping students understand the distinction between performing magic and merely executing tricks. While some students enjoy learning a few impressive illusions to share with family and friends, others are deeply committed to pursuing professional-level performance.”
James Monroe High School has been adversely affected by gang violence, weapons, and drugs on their campus. This magic program, according to Oscar, is one way they’re trying to inject something positive into the school culture.
ShareMagic provided units of The Ultimate Guide to Magic by Joshua Jay and Andi Gladwin, as well as magic kits so the kids would have props to use in their own shows. The ultimate goal of the program? “Our ultimate goal,” Oscar told me, “is to present a private show for the campus administration.”
We let Oscar know that ShareMagic would love to continue to support the program and its students until they achieve that goal…and beyond.
